Montenegro is in southeast Europe, on the Balkan coast. In 2003, out of the remnants of the former Yugoslavia, Montenegro and Serbia entered into a union to stabilise the region. Montenegro gained sovereignty in 2006, after 55 per cent of the population voted to end the Union of Serbia and Montenegro. Montenegro, derived from Venetian and meaning ‘Black Mountain’, takes its name from the densely forested Mount Lovcen in the southwestern region of the country. Over the years, Montenegro has established itself as a world-renowned holiday destination and a strategic destination for some of the world’s most important industries.
